The city of Piran
Piran is
the birth place of the famous violinist and composer, Guiseppe Tartini,
the bronze gentleman with violin on the pedestal in the middle of the
main square. The tomb of the Tartini family is in the church of St. Fancis.
There are several churches in Piran, The most prominent being the Renaissance-Baroque
parish church of St. George, with a high looking tower and Baptisty on
a hill, from where there is a fine view to sea over the roof of the of
the town's houses.
Piran is
cluttered on a narrow peninsular between Strunjan and Piran Bay and so
the houses are composed, the streets are narrow and there are historical
gems at every step; 17th century town gate of St. George; the 15th century
building known as the Venetian, one of the most charming examples of Gothic
architecture in Slovenia; "hanging houses" in the web of narrow,
winding small streets which from the characteristic architectural motif
of Piran; the vaulted passages and arcaded courtyards of 17th century
Franciscan monastery: 15th century stone flagstaffs; Dolfin's, Milje's,
the Cathedral and Central gates in the wall, which is still visible in
part, etc. All these pearls are bound into the unity of Piran, a first
class monument.
